Touring Trophy

Played on courses of distinction, for the honour of the family.

Origins & Tradition

A History of the Trophy

George and Frazer undertook a trip to the wonderful West Coast (of Scotland) in 1999 and played golf at first Machrahannich Golf Course and then twice on successive days over The Machrie on Islay. After those matches it was decided that such matches deserved to be played for a Trophy and that one should be purchased. So it was, at Spean Bridge on the way home to Cawdor. The Trophy was named the Wilson Touring Trophy and has since been played for - and filled as required with The Royal Brackla.

Credit must go to Malcolm McKay - George's maternal Grandfather, Frazer's Great Grandfather and Sam's Great Great Grandfather for introducing golf to the family.

George writes in 2025 - My first memory of a being on a golf course was with my Grampa at Irvine Ravenspark Golf Course when I was too young to walk round but Grampa carried me and put me down and picked me up between shots. Thereafter as I grew up he had the patience of a saint in allowing me to play with him and often his friend, Charlie Fearns, never complaining when I hit what were then precious golf balls, with big smiles on their faces, (the covers on balls cut and split easily then) into unfindable places.

As a reminder of those days I still have the club - a Mashie - which I used to practice with in my Granny and Grampa's small back garden in Kilwinning - it would be appropriate if it is retained alongside the Wilson Touring Trophy. I suggest it is hereafter known as the McKay Mashie.

The Rules

1

The Trophy will be competed for between two or more Wilson Family members so defined as being born as or becoming known as a relevant Wilson.

2

If two eligible family members play the winner will be decided on match play.

If more than two eligible family members compete the winner will be decided on best Stapleford score.

Normal handicap rules will apply.

3

If or when the holder is not available to defend the Trophy other eligible players may contest it on the understanding that the holder in possession will be awarded that status on his or her return to the tee regardless of intervening results. Also, in such circumstance the holder in possession will have the benefit of a tied match and retain the Trophy.

4

At the conclusion of each match the players will agree on the stroke of the round. The player making that stroke will be recorded as holder of the McKay Mashie and a label will be attached to the Mashie recording the detail.
