George and Frazer undertook a trip to the wonderful West Coast (of Scotland) in 1999 and played golf at first Machrahannich Golf Course and then twice on successive days over The Machrie on Islay. After those matches it was decided that such matches deserved to be played for a Trophy and that one should be purchased. So it was, at Spean Bridge on the way home to Cawdor. The Trophy was named the Wilson Touring Trophy and has since been played for - and filled as required with The Royal Brackla.
Credit must go to Malcolm McKay - George's maternal Grandfather, Frazer's Great Grandfather and Sam's Great Great Grandfather for introducing golf to the family.
George writes in 2025 - My first memory of a being on a golf course was with my Grampa at Irvine Ravenspark Golf Course when I was too young to walk round but Grampa carried me and put me down and picked me up between shots. Thereafter as I grew up he had the patience of a saint in allowing me to play with him and often his friend, Charlie Fearns, never complaining when I hit what were then precious golf balls, with big smiles on their faces, (the covers on balls cut and split easily then) into unfindable places.
As a reminder of those days I still have the club - a Mashie - which I used to practice with in my Granny and Grampa's small back garden in Kilwinning - it would be appropriate if it is retained alongside the Wilson Touring Trophy. I suggest it is hereafter known as the McKay Mashie.
